MALAYSIAN Super League novice KL Plus FC do not have it in mind to just make up the numbers next season with the team board having set an grand target of a top-four finish.
KL Plus get in touch with the Super League after only two seasons in the second-tier and just fail to spot out on the club's first major title when they were edged to the Premier League title last season by Kuala Muda Naza on the final day.
But KL Plus do owe a debt of gratitude to the FA of Malaysia (FAM) for their success after being secure from relegation to the third-tier FAM Cup in 2007 despite finishing bottom of the Premier League.
With Kuala Lumpur, the perennial flag bearers of the capital city, still struggling to regain their lost footing, KL Plus have taken over the mantle as the city's leading team by ensuring a representative in the Malaysian top-flight for the first time since KL's relegation in 2002.
KL Plus coach Mat Zan Mat Aris for one, himself a former KL coach and player, is glad to be back surrounded by the big boys and hopes to take his team as far as he can.
But with foreign players being barred from the league next season, the loss of Nigerian striker Aleg Agbo -- who scored 19 goals last season -- and midfielders Tercio Nunes Machado of Brazil and Argentine Adrian Dario Trinidad will be keenly felt.
After hang on to only 14 players from last season, Mat Zan will be going on a recruitment drive to plug the holes in his team if he is to take in the management's goals.
"It is not our objective of merely surviving in the Super League next season.
"We want to compete against the big teams and the management has set a goal of finishing in the top four and reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup," said Mat Zan yesterday.
"But to do that we need to build a competitive team, which has been made more difficult with the loss of the foreign pros.
"An attacking midfielder and a striker are our most urgent needs."
While Mat Zan would not be strained on hearsay linking a number of players to his side, striker Akmal Rizal Ahmad Rakhli has exposed KL Plus as one of the sides paying attention in securing his services after being free by Selangor.
National team captain Shukor Adan and striker Indra Putra Mahayuddin, who were also dumped by Selangor, could also be KL Plus' targets.
