National coach B. Sathianathan will use the friendly senior international against India in Hyderabad on Tuesday to help him identify the players for a high profile match against English giants Chelsea at the Shah Alam Stadium on July 29.
“The seniors have to work hard because the back-up boys from the Under-23 squad are fast catching up,” said Sathianathan yesterday.
He added that one of the promising players was striker Mohd Ashaari Shamsuddin, who impressed him during a friendly match against the Chinese Olympic team in Yanbian on July 13.
Sathianathan said that although they were compreensively beaten 0-4 by the Chinese, some of the national Under-23 boys, including Terengganu’s Ashaari, gave good accounts to earn a call-up to the senior team.
“Ashaari did well, coming on as a substitute to trouble the Chinese with his nippy runs,” said Sathianathan, who has also included the Terengganu striker among the 23-player initial training squad for the match against Chelsea.
Sathianathan also said that he would decide on the final squad for the match against the English Premier League club when they return from Hyderabad.
