Three years in a row during late 80’s Kedah and Kuala Lumpur meet for Malaysia Cup Final. And three times Kuala Lumpur won the match before Kedah finally won their first Malaysia Cup in 1990 beating Singapore 3-1 at Stadium Merdeka during the semi pro era.
Kedah at that time mostly represent by Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Kedah (PKNK) staff while Kuala Lumpur squad dominated by Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) staff. Kedah football revolution start after the team managed by the late Datuk Ahmad Basri Akil and coached by Haji Ahmad Shafie.
Last Sunday, both team meet again at Darul Aman Stadium to win the Sultan Kedah Cup which been held as part of commemoration of Malaysia Cup final. Among Kedah Veteran players are Ahmad Sobri Ahmad, Azmi Mahmud, Nizam Adzhar Yusuff, Fuad Idris, Hussein Jaafar, Koet Kin Kong, Idris Man, Manja Man, Mohammad Radhi Mat Din, Mohammad Ramli, Ng Chew Beng, V. Suresh, Yusuff Din, Tan Cheng Hoe, Khatul Anuar Abd Hamid, Mohd Fariza Ismail, Mohd Farouk Ismail, Kamal Idris Ali, Syed Alwi Syed Abdullah and Lee Jyn Yuen.
While Kuala Lumpur Veteran squad represented by Rashid Hassan, Rasip Ismail, Tang Siew Seng, Kamarulzaman Yusof, Chow Swe Hai, K. Gunalan, Ghani Malek, Raja Azlan, Mat Zan Mat Aris, S. Balachandran, Shahrin Majid, Malek Awab, Fandi Ahmad, Azlan Meri and Farid Dewan.
In the match, both team tie 3-3 at full time before Kedah won the penalty kick shoot out thanks to current Kedah goalkeeper coach, Ahmad Sobri who saved Fandi Ahmad and Ghani Malik penalty kick.
